What Is Builder Gel? (And Why Nail Techs Love It)

Builder gel is one of the most popular products in the nail industry today. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned nail tech, you've probably seen builder gel used to strengthen natural nails, sculpt extensions, or create overlays. But what exactly is it?

Builder gel is a thick, self-leveling gel used to build shape and structure on the natural nail or with tips/forms. It's stronger than traditional gel polish and more flexible than acrylic. It's applied in layers and cured under a UV or LED lamp.

But not all builder gels are created equal.

Some builder gels are hard gels, meaning they need to be filed off because they do not soak off with acetone. These are more durable and better suited for long extensions or heavy-duty nail designs.

Others are soak-off builder gels (often called "soft builder gels"). These can be removed with acetone, making them a gentler choice for clients with sensitive nails or those who like to switch styles often.

As a nail technician, knowing which builder gel to use can make all the difference in retention, client comfort, and time spent on removals.

Pro Tip: Many builder gels on the market today still contain ingredients like TPO (a photo-initiator now banned in the EU) or HEMA, which is a leading cause of allergic reactions in nails. These ingredients are especially risky if products come into contact with the skin.

At Hey Beautiful, our builder gels are 100% TPO-free and HEMA-free, giving you peace of mind while creating beautiful, long-lasting nails. Shop our clean builder gels—loved by beginners and pros alike.
